For Amit, what began as an act of kindness toward one injured cow has today become a full-fledged shelter housing many, many rescued and abandoned cows, each carrying their own story of pain, neglect, and survival.
Amit’s days begin before sunrise and end long after the moon has risen. His life revolves around these divine beings, feeding them, treating their wounds, and comforting them through their suffering. Among all the stories he has witnessed, one remains etched deep in his heart, the story of a baby calf that stumbled into a farm one day.
The little one had accidentally cut his ear on a sharp metal sheet while trying to find food. At first, no one cared enough to help. Days passed, and the wound grew worse. Flies laid eggs in the open cut, and soon maggots began eating into the baby’s flesh.
By the time Amit found him, the infection had spread so deeply that every time the calf shook his head, blood splattered across his back and stomach. The pain in his eyes was unbearable, but even more painful was the realization that there are thousands of such innocent lives suffering silently, just because no one wants to take responsibility.
Amit cleaned the wound, applied medicine, and sat beside the calf for nights, whispering words of comfort as if the little one could understand. Slowly, the wound began to heal, but that incident left Amit shaken.
“Humans still have a place to go when they’re hurt, but what about them?” he says, looking around at the dozens of cows resting in his Gaushala, Shri Kapilaksham Desi Nandi Gaushala Foundation, some limping from road accidents, some with broken horns, and some blind from neglect.
But with compassion comes struggle. Each day, Amit receives four to five new cases, injured, starving, or abandoned cows in desperate need of help. And while his heart has endless space, his resources do not.
He often skips his own meals to ensure the cows are fed, but even that isn’t enough. There are days when the fodder runs short, when medicines are borrowed on credit, and when rain seeps through the broken roof over the shelter.
Amit dreams of a day when his Gaushala will have a proper roof, medical facilities, clean water, and enough food for every cow that enters. But to make that dream real, he needs help. Every contribution can make a difference, a handful of fodder, a dose of medicine, a few bricks toward a stronger home.
For Amit, these cows are not just animals, they are sacred souls, embodiments of patience and purity. As he often says with tears in his eyes, “They may not speak, but their eyes say everything, they just want to live.”
This Diwali, while the world lights up their homes, Amit hopes to light up the lives of his cows, with your help. Because compassion, after all, is the truest celebration of all.
