Shaheed Diwas is celebrated to honor the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering spirit of those who laid down their lives for the nation. It is a day of remembrance, of pride, but also a moment to reflect on the reality many of our heroes face once the uniform comes off.
While we salute their bravery, there are veterans among us who are quietly struggling, living lives far from the dignity they deserve. Some of them, after serving the country with everything they had, are now forced to sleep on plastic sheets, battling illness, poverty, and loneliness.
In the Indian Army, a minimum of 15 years of service is required to qualify for a service pension. But life doesn’t always follow rules. Due to injuries, health issues, or unforeseen circumstances, many soldiers are compelled to leave the service early making them ineligible for a pension. What follows is often a harsh reality: financial instability, lack of basic necessities, and in many cases, homelessness.
Behind every uniform is a family. When a soldier is forced out of service without support, it is not just one life that is affected- it’s an entire household left vulnerable. Children are pulled out of schools, medical needs go unmet, and families are left to survive without any steady source of income.
There are our veterans today who once stood fearlessly at the borders, but now stand helpless in the face of everyday survival.
Amidst this, there are individuals like Gaurav Shukla, the son of a Kargil war veteran, who chose to turn empathy into action. Through his initiative, Support Our Heroes, he has been working tirelessly to ensure that the sacrifices of these brave men and their families do not go unnoticed or unsupported. Since its inception, the organization has helped over 350+ veterans and their families, providing essential supplies, medical assistance, and educational support for their children.
This shaheed Diwas, let’s go beyond remembrance. Let’s stand beside those who once stood for us. Your support can bring dignity, care, and hope back into the lives of our forgotten heroes.
They protected our nation. Now it’s our turn to protect them!
