Feeding a Sadhu: The Purest Form of Prayer This Maha Shivratri

If you visit Kashi during Maha Shivratri, you will see faith everywhere. The ghats are crowded, temples are filled, and the city stays awake through the night. Devotees come from faraway places to pray, to fast, to pour milk on Shivji, and to ask for blessings. Everywhere you look, there is devotion.

But if you pause for a moment and look a little closer, you will notice something else.

You will see sadhus sitting quietly on the ghats-some wrapped in worn-out cloth, some with nothing but a small bag beside them. These are the sadhus who have left their homes, families, and even their identities behind for Mahadev. They do not come to Kashi for celebration. They come for aradhana, tapasya, and prayer. For them, Maha Shivratri is not a festival. It is a night of surrender.

And many of them spend this sacred night hungry.

Every year on Maha Shivratri, lakhs of sadhus are drawn towards Kashi. Amidst the lights, chants, and celebrations, their reality remains the same. The crowd is so large that their suffering often goes unheard. While we move from temple to temple, these saints sit silently on the ghats, surviving entire days and nights on nothing but a few sips of Ganga jal.

We pour milk on stone idols of ShivJi, while the living forms of Mahadev sit in hunger just a few steps away.

Our scriptures remind us that sadhu seva is itself Shiv seva. Feeding a hungry sadhu carries greater merit than fasting. Serving these saints with respect and compassion is the truest form of devotion. Mahadev does not reside only inside temples; He lives in those who have renounced everything for Him.

In a nation that takes pride in the sacrifice of its saints, it raises an uncomfortable question. If a sadhu sleeps hungry on the night of Maha Shivratri, what does our devotion truly mean? Faith cannot exist only in rituals; it must be reflected in our actions.
