I Saw A 90-Year-Old Woman Sitting Next To The Dustbin & Eating…

From witnessing an elderly lady eating next to a dustbin and surviving, to hearing elderly people cry as they were left waiting for their children who told them that they would get back, to children removing their elderly parents from all the rights that they had legally and abandoning them Gauri has seen it all. 

Life was tough for Gauri initially. Being with an abusive husband, with her only daughter, she struggled a lot in her life, but the moment she saw that there were these elderly people who have suffered terrible humiliation and abandonment, she easily realized that her pain wasn’t as bad as theirs.

Wanting to help those who once had everything and sacrificed so much for their loved ones only to have been left by them, Gauri wanted to be the child that these elderly people never had, or what they longed for.  Starting with just 5 people, with 5 beds, sacrificing her own savings, working and providing for these needs, today Gauri has established her own Swami Niwas Foundation, where there are around 85 elderly people! Showering them with love, care and kindness. 

Gauri took responsibility for not just cooking food, but also feeding these people, making them feel wanted, heard and at the most seen in this cruel world. The smile on their faces has been a treat and brought a sense of sukoon (Peace) to Gauri. 

“The love that I never received in my life, I get it from them. When my own family wasn’t there, these elderly people became my family.. They became my moms and dads. For me it’s like coming back to a full circle. They long to be loved and taken care of, and so do I! So I would say, I am content in the work that I do” 

Having said all the above things, today Gauri faces a major challenge. The challenge of having her own place to help function this noble work. Being in a rented place, Gauri has to pay a lump sum amount every month. Not only that but she also has to take care of their medical needs, provide them with good food. 

Today Gauri struggles to meet the basic need of this Swami Niwas Foundation, and even as she longs to give these elderly innocent people a good life, she falls short, thinking about the future.
