Project:
This Mahashivratri, as we pour milk over Shivji’s idol and chant His name, let us remember that Lord Shiva is the Lord of liberation (Moksha), the one who grants peace to every soul. But not every soul in this world finds freedom with dignity. Thousands lie abandoned-forgotten, nameless, with no family to bid them farewell. These are the ones the world forgets, the ones left lying in mortuaries or on the streets, unnoticed and unloved.
Since 2022, Pooja Sharma, the founder of Bright The Soul Foundation, has dedicated herself to ensuring that no soul is left unclaimed. Every month, she personally performs the final rites of these abandoned souls, ensuring they receive wood for the pyre, a shroud, flowers, and all necessary offerings. Once the cremation is complete, their ashes are taken to Haridwar and immersed in the holy Ganga, granting them the same peace and liberation we wish for our own family members. Over 4000 souls have been given dignity and respect through this unwavering effort.
But this work is far from easy. Procuring proper pyre materials, shrouds, flowers, and other essentials is expensive and logistically challenging for her. Every soul requires care, respect, and ritual, and each cremation costs around 5000 INR. On top of this, transporting bodies from hospitals and mortuaries to cremation sites is an enormous challenge. Currently, there is no dedicated ambulance to ensure safe and dignified transportation. Many times, these abandoned souls must wait, sometimes for days, before they can be cremated-denying them the peace they deserve and making it emotionally and physically taxing for the volunteers.
This Mahashivratri, we have the opportunity to honor Lord Shiva not only with devotion but also with action and compassion. As we light the lamps and pour milk over his idol, let us remember that Shiva is the protector of the weak, the compassionate lord who grants liberation to all souls. By supporting the cremation of abandoned souls, we become instruments of his grace, giving peace to those who were denied even the most basic dignity in life and death.
Your contribution, however small, can make a life-changing difference. It will provide wood for pyres, shrouds, flowers, and essential offerings for the cremation. It will help fund a dedicated ambulance, ensuring that every soul is transported respectfully and safely. Your support will ensure that no soul is left unclaimed, no one is left abandoned, and every departed life is honored.
This Mahashivratri, Be the hand of Shiva in the final journey of these forgotten souls. Help them leave this world with dignity, peace, and liberation. Together, we can transform grief into hope, despair into compassion, and devotion into action.
